Indian Railways has launched the Tatkal system only for those planning to travel suddenly. Well, earnings could also be a big reason for this. Because Tatkal tickets are more expensive than regular tickets. There are currently two Tatkal ticket booking systems.

IRCTC Tatkal train tickets can be booked a day in advance. Booking for 3AC and above classes starts at 10 am and booking for Tatkal sleeper tickets starts at 11 am sharp. Apart from the ticket office, Tatkal tickets can also be booked online. You will often see long queues at IRCTC Tatkal Rail Ticket booking centres. In such a situation, online booking remains the only option for convenience. But booking Tatkal tickets online is not child’s play. On busy routes and during peak season, you only have a few minutes, literally a few seconds, to book your ticket.

First of all, you must have an IRCTC account. You can create your account by visiting the website https://www.irctc.co.in.

After that, make a master list. You can access this option through My Profile. Hover your mouse over My Profile at the top. Here you will see the main list in the drop down list. Click here. The main list is actually a list of passengers that you can already save in your profile. On this page, you will need to store information such as passenger name, age, gender, seat preference, food preference, senior citizen, ID type and ID number. After saving all this information, click “Add Passenger”. Thus, all the information about that passenger will be stored in the master list of the IRCTC portal. By the way, we advise you not to give preference to a sleeping place. Because the most important thing for you is to get a ticket. You can reserve your desired seat even while traveling. The main list can store data on up to 20 passengers.
Make a travel list
After compiling your basic list, we suggest you create a travel list. This can also be found in the My Profile dropdown. This can only be done after compiling a master list. Let’s assume that a total of 6 people are going to travel. With these passengers you can create a travel list. Go to the travel list page. This will ask for the list name and details. After this, you will be able to select the names of passengers from the main list. Select the names of the passengers you want to add to this list. We suggest calling this list something that is in itself revealing. We suggest completing the work of compiling your master list and travel list in advance.

Preparing to book
Now let’s move on to the ticket booking process. You will need to login to the web portal depending on the class for which you want to get the Tatkal ticket. For 3AC or higher classes you must log in before 9:57 am. To book tickets in slippers at 10.57. After that, immediately enter the names of the stations according to your trip in the “Plan my trip” field. After that, select the date and finally click on “Submit”.
After submitting your travel information, you will be taken to a page with train offers. Here will be a list of all the trains that will run on this route tomorrow. Above the list of trains, you will see radio buttons for General, Premium Tatkal, Women and Tatkal. Now click on Tatkal.
After that, select one of the trolley classes shown in front of the train you want to ride. Please note that if you do not select the instant version, you will see general availability on the website.

After clicking on a category at the top of the page, a ticket availability window will appear. Let’s say you want a Tatkal ticket to Third AC in Mumbai Rajdhani. You entered all the information before 9.58 and were taken to the ticket availability page. Here you will see the total number of places available, but the “Book Now” button will only be active at 10am. In such a situation, you do not need to exit this page. You remain on this page. But the IRCTC server automatically displays a page that remains static for a long time. In such a situation, there is no need to worry. There is a solution for this, you can check the availability of seats in different trains at that time. But keep in mind not to click too much on the page. Continue clicking at 20-25 second intervals, but stop at exactly 21:59 and click between the different train classes of your choice.
As soon as 10 o’clock presses the third class AC button of your favorite train again. If you log into the railway server at 10 o’clock, the “Book Now” button will be activated. Now click the “Book Now” button.
How to Use the Master List and Travel List
The speed of your fingers will prove very effective on this page, and this is where the master list and travel list will come in handy. Which we mentioned earlier. This is a page for sharing booking information. Let’s say you need to travel with five people. If you enter information like name, age, gender, preference of each passenger, then the Tatkal ticket will be out of your hands. The master list will come in handy to get this job done quickly. At the border of the passenger information window, you will see a “Select from main list” button. By clicking on it, you will receive information about all those people whose names you have already saved in the main list. Here you can select the names of the passengers for whom you want to book tickets. This way, the passenger details will be automatically populated on the IRCTC booking page within a few seconds. However, the method of selecting passenger names from a master list will be effective for one or two passengers. But you should choose a travel list for 6 passengers. Next to the “Select from travel list” item there is also an option to select from the main list. After that, you select a travel list. The names of all passengers will be automatically filled in the field.
Remember this to save time
You will now also see fields such as Auto Upgrade, Book Confirmed Tickets Only, Preferred Coach ID, Travel Insurance, and Mobile Number. In them you can add options of your choice. We suggest you choose travel insurance only. Avoid other frills to save time. Go straight down and enter the captcha code. When booking Tatkal, the captcha code is a little more complicated to write. In such a situation, we advise you to fill it out after reading it carefully. If the code is incorrect, you will lose 10 seconds of your work, which is too much for instant booking. Once you have shared all this information, click the “Next” button.
This is the last page of IRCTC before booking a ticket. Here you can immediately view trip details, train date and passenger. Now it’s time to pay. You will get options like Debit Card, Net Banking, Credit Card and Paytm. You can select the payment method of your choice. Well, we have found that net banking is a much simpler method. Because you have to transfer less information compared to a debit or credit card, which saves time. And in booking Tatkal tickets, time is like money.
Important points: On a busy route with an internet speed of 1 Mbps, it is unlikely that you will be able to book a confirmed Tatkal ticket. It is best to use speeds above 4 Mbps. The OTP for payment depends on your luck and network. Keep your phone handy while booking your tickets.
