Moto G Turbo Edition review

Last year, Motorola returned to India with the first generation Moto G phone. This smartphone soon became the best choice in terms of value for money. After the launch of the third generation devices of this phone, there is confusion in the market. There are many options available to the user. The credit for this goes to Chinese companies. Moto G phones definitely lag in terms of specifications in the sub-Rs 15,000 price range, but the brand value attracts consumers time and again.

To stay ahead of the competition, Motorola has introduced the Moto G Turbo Edition. This will count as an upgrade to Moto G (Gen 3). The changes are not revolutionary. Motorola’s TurboPower feature has also been included along with processor, RAM, and storage upgrades.

Appearance and Design
In terms of design, there’s nothing new about the Moto G Turbo Edition. The weight and dimensions of the previous generation device and the newest phone are the same. The phone we received for review had a black front and a grey/blue back. The back has a rubber coating for a secure grip. It’s clear that this is the most attractive and reliable phone in this price range.

The panel ensures that the Moto G retains its IP67 certification mark. Rubber is also used inside to seal the micro-SIM and microSD slots. Each time you remove a panel, a warning message appears on the screen indicating that you must install the panel correctly.

The Moto G (3rd generation) is the only waterproof phone, and the Turbo Edition also comes with dust resistance. Both phones claim that nothing will happen if you keep them in three feet of fresh water for 30 minutes. This doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

The curved back has become a hallmark of Motorola’s style these days. For this reason, using the phone with one hand becomes easier. It is a little heavy, 155 grams. Under the camera on the back panel there is a plate for beauty. This will consciously or unconsciously attract your attention.

The earpiece and microphone grille located on the front panel have a convex design. Both give the impression of stereo speakers, and this role is played by the grille at the bottom. The power button is on the right side. Below are the volume rockers. There is a second microphone near the audio jack on top. There are also micro-USB ports at the top.

Moto G Turbo Edition supports fast charging. It was called Turbopower. Motorola claims that after 15 minutes of charging, this phone will last 6 hours. The charger that comes with the phone is larger than expected. It gives an output voltage of 12 Volts. Our only complaint is that it comes with a fixed USB cable, which means you’ll have to use a separate cable to transfer data. Interestingly, Motorola’s website and promotional materials featured a detachable USB cable.

Specifications and software
There are two variants of the Moto G (Gen 3). You can choose between 1GB RAM-8GB storage and 2GB RAM-16GB storage. Whereas the Moto Turbo is available in only one variant (2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage). It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset. Adreno 405 GPU is integrated for graphics. The memory can also be expanded via microSD card up to 32GB.

Screen 5 inches with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels. Today, there are higher resolution phones available in this price range. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top. There is also a 2470 mAh battery. The rear camera has a 13-megapixel sensor and dual-LED flash. With the rear camera, you can record videos at 1080p resolution. There is a 5-megapixel camera for selfies. Both SIM card slots support LTE.

The biggest feature of every Motorola phone is the stock version of Android. The user interface of the Moto G Turbo Edition has also not undergone significant changes. You’ll get Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and there’s also talk of getting an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the future. Some changes have also been made. The most important among them is the Moto Display feature. Whenever your phone detects motion, notifications automatically start appearing on the screen.

There are also some keyboard shortcuts, for example, if you hold the handset and twist your wrist twice, the camera app will launch automatically. Or shake the handset sideways twice and the flashlight will turn on immediately. These are useful features, but they cannot be fixed. Users can perform these actions knowingly or unknowingly and also know how to disable these features.

The default photo size is fixed at 9.7 megapixels, which is a bit annoying. As soon as you click on the video camera icon, it will start recording video, which is good.

performance
Motorola seems to be lagging behind in screen resolution. For many people, a 720p screen is not enough. Viewing angles are good, but overall the screen is a bit dim compared to the competition. The sound is loud and clear most of the time. The experience of playing and watching videos on this smartphone was great. We’re also glad that the screen didn’t get too hot during this time.

Photos taken outdoors in daylight turned out very warm. We weren’t very pleased with the playback quality; overall sharpness is good. Photos taken in low light turned out well, especially for a phone in this price range.

The phone’s battery performance surprised us in the video recording test. It lasted 7 hours 36 minutes, while the Moto G (Gen 3) battery lasted longer in the same test. It is possible that this could have happened due to changes made to the hardware. However, with normal use there are no complaints about the battery. The battery lasted well for a day. The fast charging feature is nice. However, carrying a phone charger with you can be difficult.

our decision
Since the Moto G (Gen 3), many affordable phones have been launched in India. Some of them are equipped with a Full HD screen, 3 GB of RAM, and a fingerprint scanner. Motorola owner Lenovo is also selling its top-spec Vibe S1 phone for just Rs 1,500 extra. If Lenovo discontinues the Vibe line of phones and cedes the space to Motorola, then we can expect improved specs in the coming days.

The Moto G (Gen 3) impressed us in terms of experience. Knowing that in terms of technical characteristics it is very weak compared to its competitors. The new Moto G Turbo Edition is slightly better than this, but not enough to bring Motorola to the forefront. With its help, Motorola will be able to remain competitive, nothing more.

Water resistance and stock Android are two important reasons why users choose Motorola. Fast charging is like added value. We believe that purchasing the Moto G Turbo Edition will be a safe and wise decision. It won’t let you down.
